“This is the debut album by the International Jazz trio WEI3, which comprises of German (of Indian origin) pianist Jarry Singla, Polish bassist Maciej Garbowski and French drummer Peter Orins. The album presents ten original compositions, five of which are by Singla, four by Garbowski and one is a sacral piece.

Although basically a classic Jazz piano trio, WEI3 takes this format way beyond its typical modus operandi, venturing deeply into modern Jazz with many degrees of freedom and spontaneity. Although melody based, the music allows for exploration of different tonalities and the use of electronics, although moderate, adds yet another dimension to the proceedings. Some World Music influences are also present.

The individual performances by these three musicians are spectacular from start to finish and their combined talents create an ensemble sound, which is very challenging, intelligent and deeply aesthetic, reflecting the best European qualities found in contemporary Jazz

Overall this is a superb debut effort, which emphasizes the endless possibilities for Jazz to constantly develop and conquer uncharted territory. The greatest asset of this album is the fact that the music is very advanced and challenging and yet seems to be perfectly acceptable by the vast majority of Jazz listeners, making it an excellent tool to develop the understanding and love of non-trivial music. Jarry Singla est allemand, pianiste et joue aussi de l’harmonium indien. Maciej Garbowski est polonais, contrebassiste et tâte aussi des electronics. Quant à Peter Orins, on le connait bien ici. Tous trois forment le Wei 3. Ici, la présence, le soyeux, l’harmonie, la consonance, les couleurs automnales. Ecrit comme ceci, on pourrait définir un trio comme il y en a tant aujourd’hui. Soit, un trio ennuyeux et soporifique. Sauf qu’ici, c’est tout le contraire. Entre chaleur, douceurs et electronics pénétrants, ce trio sait respirer et faire acte d’imaginaire(s). C’est un trio homogène flirtant parfois avec le méditatif sans oublier de pondre quelque superbe mélodie (Salutaris). Et le tout avec profondeur et inspiration. C’est un trio qui peut engager un latin jazz sans que l’on le remarque. Et c’est un trio où officie le pianiste Jarry Singla dont les denses suspensions ne sont pas sans évoquer le grand Joachim Kühn. A suivre…  – Improjazz Mars 2017, Luc Bouquet

At the heart of this jazz trio is Jarry Singla, an Indo-German pianist who also plays Indian harmonium, with influences ranging from European musical traditions and a variety of jazz styles, as well as classical and folk music from non-European cultures. French drummer Peter Orins (also a member of Kaze and TOC) and polish upright bassist Maciej Garbowski (also a founding member of the RGG Trio, as well as work with Terje Rypdal, Tomasz Stanko, and others), both doubling on electronics, round out the group. The band is named for the Weimar Triangle of France, Germany and Poland, the respective homes of the three musicians. The ten compositions at hand are written either by Singla or Garbowski, covering a variety of primarily jazz styles leaning toward the classic sound of the late 50s (reminiscent of the late Vince Guaraldi at times) with strong influences from classical European roots, leaving plenty of room for interpretation and improvisation, and of course the folk and indo-ethnic elements that are brought in by Singla. Without a second main melodic instrument (although the bass rises to the occasion at times) the piano is pretty much always in the spotlight and drives the trio’s direction; fortunately Singla is a diverse composer and player and keeps the proceedings moving forward in multiple directions. The overall feel is somewhat laid back and not at all aggressive, but interesting and filled with emotion. Yet to see is if Kaliko is a one-off or whether there will be more releases to come. – Exposé, Peter Thelen

Le trio s’appelle WEI3, en référence au Triangle de Weimar, qui symbolise la coopération entre trois pays européens, l’Allemagne, lieu de résidence du pianiste d’origine indienne Jarry Singla, la Pologne, lieu de naissance du contrebassiste Maciej Garbowski, et la France, lieu d’habitation du batteur lillois d’origine suédoise Peter Orins. Il y a quelques soixante ans, le pianiste américain Bill Evans libérait le « trio jazz avec contrebasse et batterie », en permettant à chacun de ses partenaires d’aller au-delà de leur « simple » rôle rythmique. WEI3 s’inscrit dans cette lignée, avec des vertus d’énergie et d’inspiration mélodique qui font qu’ils n’ont rien à envier à d’autres combos plus connus que le leur. Le trio témoigne d’une volonté d’ouverture et d’aération, quelques touches discrètes d’électronique de la part du batteur et du contrebassiste et quelques interventions à l’harmonium indien de la part du pianiste venant apporter une touche d’originalité. La propension du trio à l’improvisation l’emmène souvent sur des terrains emballants. Et, tant pis si on me taxe de chauvinisme, mais je peux pas ne pas remarquer que le jeu du batteur est ici captivant de bout en bout. – Illico, Claude Colpaert

Pour conclure cette « pile » du mois de janvier, voici le trio piano-contrebasse-batterie le plus original du mois, sans aucun doute. Ces trois musiciens qui ont leurs origines respectivement en Inde, en Pologne et en Suède se retrouvent à Cologne pour enregistrer « Kaliko ». En parfaite connivence, Jarry Singla, Maciej Garbowski et Peter Orins (du Collectif Mizzix – Lille) donnent vie à une musique très équilibrée entre liberté et structures où chaque instrument contribue à développer une large palette de couleurs et de formes sonores. Une belle référence du label lillois Circum-Disc.
